Quick Thoughts on Haunting Adeline, Hunting Adeline, & Satan's Affair by HD Carlton
One of my goals for 2025 is to read 100 books this year. The last two books that I read in 2024 were Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline and my first book of 2025, Satan's Affair all have the same characters within them. HD Carlton is a very talented writer and her ability to bring you into the world of her characters is truly magical. I first picked up Haunting Adeline because I knew that Adeline would have loved seeing her name on the cover. The storyline is not one that would have been appropriate for her to read until adulthood.
Here is where I will offer a little warning about these books. They are dark. They have graphic portrayals of sexual assault and sexual abuse as well as human trafficking of both adult women and minors. Although, I will offer that there are not as many details within the stories about the children, but children are mentioned. These books are 100% not appropriate for anyone who is not an adult. They have some of the most graphic sexual encounters that I have ever read.
Adeline's character is complicated and she has a number of traumas that happen in her life. She has dark thoughts and those dark thoughts are explored throughout the narratives of Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline. Zade's character is equally complicated and has also experienced traumas that have affected his ability to have normal emotional connections. The two characters almost feed off of each other.
Satan's Affair is written about one of the later characters that is introduced in Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline. Satan's Affair explores the life of this character throughout the pages that overlap a bit in the storyline but uniquely this book can be read before or after the other two as a kind of "create your own adventure" in adult reading. I read this one after the other two and could have read it before but there is no need to. It was written first.
Well, I don't want to give too much away, but do highly recommend that you think twice before reading this if you are sensitive to certain types of traumas...especially those associated with sexual assault as it might be hard for you to read.
